I have been doing maintenance for KInfoCenter in my spare time and there is a few repeatable bugs that keep getting reported to bugzilla.

The main one is that clicking enter on a expandable tree item does not expand the tree. This is because that is not the default behaviour of Qt.  The default keys for navigating a treeview are:

I do intend to add this to the manual There is a few other small bugs as well to do with how the USB devices KCM looks for the usbid file. I intend to fix that this week. It causes issues where the USB items you have connected are not being shown, so don’t be surprised with devices not showing when you know you have plugged them in.

In other news I have not submitted the Network Interfaces KCM ( seen in older posts ) due to Solid::Control being split up into different libraries. Once this is done and I have made some UI changes and I shall submit it again and do another post of the shinies

Also I been doing so much KDE work. I have modified KHelpCenter a little bit, trying to fix the bugs and moving it from QT3/KDE3 Support items to Qt4/KDE4. I have also been getting rid of features that don’t work. I intend at some point to change KHelpCenter for the better but at the moment I don’t have time

Anyway.. on to what this blog is really about, a new KCM module ( well a rewrite of the old KCM module anyway ).

The new KCM Network Interfaces module features are:

- Shows wireless connections as well as wired connections

- Can filter between wired and wireless connections.

- Shows the connected access point’s information

- Shows the connected subnet for the wired connection

I intend to add it to KDE 4.6, I just need to put it through KDE review first. I need to clean the code up a little bit but hopefully I should move it into KDE review this week.

I also have to apologize, there is a translation bug in KInfoCenter for 4.5.0 where categories and not translated. This will be fixed in 4.5.1. Sorry about that.

I have also added examples on how to create KCM modules in KDEExamples in trunk! Now you have no excuse to not make KCM modules I intend this week to write a wiki post for making KCM modules, I shall blog here when I have.

KInfoCenter is all finished (well unless anyone finds bugs) so i thought i would list the new features that were included in the new rewrite. I shall also list where KInfoCenter is going from 4.5 to 4.6:

KInfoCenter 4.5:

- It’s now not a UniqueApplication, so you can run more than one instance. You cannot at the moment run the same KCM in multiple instances, that is planned for 4.6.

- The side menu is now a treeview, it gives it better organisation and allows me to put certain KCMs in certain categories.

- The about KCM is gone and replaced with a Summary KCM. There was no point in repeating the listing as it’s in the menu, the small information summaries have been moved to the default WhatsThis dialogs.

- The processor, partition, sound, devices KCM’s have been removed as they are now duplicate features in the new Device Viewer KCM

- Added Internationalisation to some KCM’s that did not have it before.

- Added an Export feature, while this is in the main viewer it’s not implemented in any KCM’s at the moment, that is for 4.6.

- The IOSlaveInfo KCM has been removed, this just showed the KioSlaves help pages, its in the help browser so there is no point in it being in KInfoCenter.

- Fixed all the bugs present in the Old KInfoCenter, apart from some KCM related ones.

Now the main “viewer” has been finished, I shall spend the time between 4.5 and 4.6 to improve the KCMs. I am creating at the moment a new NIC KCM and redoing some of the PCI KCM. I am also intending to add the ability to print the information from KCMs instead of exporting it and giving you the ability to export in various formats.

I have many other ideas for 4.6, but I don’t want to list them until I know I will have the time to implement them. It also gives me a good reason to write another blog post
